Long Overdue: Environmental Health and Public Health Emergency Preparedness Collide
This month's column features a guest commentary for CAPT Rene?e Funk, associate director for emergency management at the National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry regarding the Public Health Emergency Preparedness cooperative agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to strengthen and enhance the capabilities of state, local, and territorial public health and healthcare systems to respond effectively to evolving threats and other emergencies. CAPT Funk highlights the specific environmental health activities within the agreement, which are positive steps toward increasing environmental health activities across the country. While these improvements are a step forward, Dr. Dyjack advocates for a separate environmental health capability section within the agreement, rather than environmental health being parsed across multiple sections.
