Kapiti in the Time of a Pandemic

Kapiti Island, a bird sanctuary in New Zealand, provides an example of how radical measures were required to achieve radical results. Over a period of 100 years, radical measures were implemented to restore Kapiti from deforestation and to rid the island of invasive mammal species that threatened the native birds. This example helps frame Dr. Dyjack's call to begin the journey of rethinking our profession and creating a common vision for a restored environmental health enterprise during the current pandemic. NEHA's recent rapid needs assessment of the profession in response to COVID-19 is also discussed. The column concludes with an epilogue that addresses COVID-19's effect on NEHA and the profession.
